From 19 to 26 July 2020 the annual self-titled International Youth and Expert Forum was held in Foros (the Republic of Crimea).
Foros Forum has been held annually since 1999 and presents a unique opportunity for continuing education for students, graduate students and young scientists who are interested in political science and would like to connect their future with politics and public administration. The founder and leader of the forum is the director of the Institute for Political Studies, a well-known political scientist Sergei Aleksandrovich Markov.
The packed agenda of the Forum let the participants to discuss many relevant issues, such as: the current state of the Russian economy, problems and prospects of German-Russian relations; the armed forces of the Russian Federation: the current state and development prospects, as well as to understand how Russians make elections in other countries.
Implemented in the format of a summer school, the Forum provides an opportunity to receive up-to-date information from leading experts, state and political figures, improve professional skills, and also acquire contacts for further cooperation. The program of the Forum is made taking into consideration the needs of young people and involves not only a cognitive component, but also informal events that contribute to the development of communication and leadership skills.
Graduates of the Foros Forum are governors and vice-governors of a number of Russian regions, deputies of the State Duma and regional parliaments, they work in the Russian Government, ministries and departments, leading Russian media and non-profit organizations.
While opening the 21st Forum, Sergei Markov noted the following, “Crimea is a part of the Great Mediterranean Civilization, which went to Russia. Together with Crimea Russia is becoming a great country that will determine its own fate and the fate of other countries. Russia without Crimea is just a regional power,” he stated.
According to Mr. Markov, the Foros Forum has a number of distinctive features of this sort of event:
“Firstly, the Foros Forum is a free discussion platform without imposing a point of view, which is rarely the case. Forum participants appreciate this freedom.
Secondly, this is a truly independent public Forum, that is quite rare nowadays, since basically the forums are state, and those that are public have mainly of a pronounced anti-Russian oppositional character, being in fact a part of one or another political project. Our Forum is really unique in this respect.
The third feature of the Forum is the unique approach to the selection of lecturers. The fact is that we mainly invite not teachers but employers, those who are involved in political and social projects. Forum participants have the opportunity to meet future employers and find a job to taste. In my time, when I worked at the Gleb Pavlovsky Foundation for Effective Politics, almost half of all employees were members of Foros. The Forum allows one to start a significant professional career.
