IAEA and its Role in WMD Non-proliferation Regime
May 16, 2017
In the terms of the European Integration Policy and Security Seminar on 16 May 2017 its participants visited the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), located at the UN complex in Vienna.
The IAEA is the leading global forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. The Agency was founded in 1957 as an independent intergovernmental organization in the UN system - an international body designed to control atomic energy and promote its peaceful use. The headquarters of the organization is located in Vienna.
With the advent of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the work of the Agency came into sharp focus, since the NPT made it mandatory for each State Party to conclude an agreement on safeguards with the IAEA.
